Worship & Music
Summer, when we depart from the lectionary and the choir is in recess, provides us with the opportunity to take up a topic or a theme, and to open ourselves to new music and liturgy. While we take a break from our normal education programs for children and adults, our Summer Series includes special activities for children and families.
With the Summer Worship Series, we aim to provide a compelling program for adults and children and to give visitors a sense of our church even during the quietude of summer. In the absence of the choir, we feature special music and often experiment with new forms of worship to encourage congregational participation in spirit-filled worship.
Our Series began in 2000 with “Twelve Minor Prophets in Twelve Weeks.” We have since taken up biblical themes, including the Sermon on the Mount, John’s Gospel, the Psalms, the Ten Commandments, and topics such as the Economy, Race in America, Urban Violence, and Joy in Worship. More recently, we have emphasized a summer of guest preaching from a rich variety of scholars, pastors, and friends, and each year we bring in a wonderfully diverse set of guest musicians.
In 2012, we are focusing on a theology of joy and refreshment in worship through our series More Joy: The Peace that Passes All Understanding.
